Cianne Fragione: Artist & Curator Dialogue

September 18 | 1:30 p.m. - 3p.m. | Soda Activity Center 

Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art (SMCMoA) will host an artist talk with Cianne Fragione on Wednesday, September 18, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. This free event will take place at the Soda Center. After a 45-minute dialogue between the artist and SMCMoA curator, Britt Royer, audience members will have an opportunity to speak and share their questions. Light refreshments will be provided.

Cianne Fragione’s exhibition, “Isole: A Voyage Among My Dreams,” includes a collection of paintings, drawings, and assemblages. It features a combination of oil paint and mixed-media materials, including found objects and textiles. Inspired by personal and cultural experiences, it evokes the ephemeral nature of memories, traditions, and histories.

Ensemble Assemblage

September 29 at 11 a.m. | October 11 at 3 p.m. | October 26 at 3 p.m. | November 3 at 11 a.m. | November 22 at 3 p.m. | December 7 at 3 p.m.

Ensemble Assemblage brings forward Desiree Sturrock’s (SMCMoA student assistant) senior music capstone project. Saint Mary's artists—musicians Adanna Ogu (voice + guitar), Reeya Dharmadhikari (voice), and Sara Karkal (violin), alongside dancers Cadence Godwin, Lu Price, and Erica Hardy—will collaborate and perform through music and movement to respond to work from the exhibition Isole: A Voyage Among My Dreams.  

The ensemble will select a painting, a related poem for inspiration, and lyrics for each performance. The composition will take shape around those elements as the artists explore the relationship between creativity and their ability to channel it through instruments (physical, vocal, or our bodies). Through this work, Ensemble Assemblage seeks to de-stigmatize artistry through multidisciplinary, improvisatory performance.

Coffee & Conversation

with illustrator and alumna Kylene Glimore

October 24 at 11 a.m. 

Join the Museum of Art for a coffee and conversation with illustrator and alumna Kylene Gilmore. Kylene creates scientific illustrations of fauna, flora, and landscapes. This past fall, she collaborated with MoA to create custom stickers that speak to the wildlife of the East Bay and Saint Mary's College. Learn more about her journey, inspiration, and work. 

This program is co-sponsored by the School of Science and the Center for Women and Gender Equity. Coffee, tea, and light snacks will be provided. 

Haunts & Lore: Community Story-Writing Workshop

Thursday, October 31 at 2 p.m. 

Join the Museum of Art for a community story-writing workshop to uncover the hauntings and lore in the current exhibition, Isole. Coffee and spooky treats will be provided. Please bring your own writing materials.

This workshop will focus on the assemblage work Ritorno. Participants will write a paragraph about a haunting (past life) of one of the objects identified in the work. After five minutes, this haunting will be exchanged with another, and writers will draft the next paragraph of a participant's haunting. This will continue through three exchange periods. Thirty minutes will be left at the end to share the lore and hauntings of each object.
